- Time it takes
- A functional working level can be reached in 4 to 8 weeks of consistent practice. Deeper proficiency is built over months of applied use.
- Price range
- Free resources are sufficient for most candidates. Mode Analytics, SQLZoo, and LeetCode SQL problems are widely used at no cost.
- Where to get it

Hands-on projects and portfolio
Applied data and AI work demonstrated through projects, public notebooks, or contributed code.

Eligibility conditions
Right to work
Employers must confirm the candidate can legally work in the UK before employment begins.
- What it means
- Usually means checking a passport, biometric residence permit, or share code. Applies to all UK employers regardless of sector.
- Who may be ruled out
- Candidates without permission to work in the UK, or whose visa conditions restrict the type or hours of work permitted.
- How strictly it is enforced
- Applies universally. Civil penalties apply to employers who fail to conduct checks correctly.
Background checks
Employers verify employment history, qualifications, and sometimes professional memberships.
- What it means
- Third-party screening firms contact previous employers and educational institutions to confirm claims made on the CV. Common at technology companies and financial services firms hiring for data roles.
- Who may be ruled out
- Candidates with material inaccuracies or unverifiable history may be withdrawn from process.
- How strictly it is enforced
- Standard practice for most data and technology roles, particularly at regulated firms. Less rigorous at startups and smaller employers.
DBS check
May apply to data roles in healthcare, education, or financial services involving access to sensitive personal data or vulnerable populations.
- What it means
- A Basic DBS check discloses unspent convictions. Healthcare and public sector data roles involving patient or client data may require Standard or Enhanced checks.
- Who may be ruled out
- Candidates with relevant unspent convictions. Assessment is role-specific and not automatic disqualification.
- How strictly it is enforced
- Required for NHS and social care roles. Variable for private sector data roles — depends on the sensitivity of data accessed.
SC clearance (specific roles)
Government, defence, and some infrastructure data roles may require Security Check (SC) clearance.
- What it means
- Checks cover identity, employment history, criminal record, financial background, and UK residency — typically requiring 5 years of continuous UK residency. Employers sponsor the process.
- Who may be ruled out
- Candidates who cannot meet residency requirements, have disqualifying risk factors, or cannot wait for clearance timing (several months).
- How strictly it is enforced
- Mandatory for roles involving government or defence data. Not required for most commercial data analyst roles.
