I would start by understanding the process goal, owners, and systems involved, ideally through a short walkthrough and a simple process map. Next I would list what could go wrong at each step—errors, fraud, delays, regulatory breach, or customer harm. For each risk I would assess likelihood and impact using a consistent scale, supported by data where possible such as incident logs or exception rates. I would prioritise the highest scores and check whether existing controls are designed well and operating effectively. Finally I would recommend mitigations, owners, and metrics to monitor, and document assumptions so stakeholders can challenge or refine the assessment.
