ESG Analyst

How the role developed

ESG investing has roots in socially responsible investing (SRI) from the 1970s and 1980s, but the modern ESG framework emerged from a 2004 UN report — "Who Cares Wins" — that argued integrating ESG factors into investment analysis leads to better long-term outcomes. The concept was formalised in the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), launched in 2006, which now has signatories managing over $120 trillion in assets.

In the UK, the Stewardship Code — updated in 2020 — raised expectations for how asset managers engage with investee companies on ESG and systemic risk, and the FCA's Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation and SFDR alignment have created new product-level disclosure requirements.

The role today

The field is maturing rapidly and becoming more technically rigorous. The proliferation of ESG data providers — MSCI, Sustainalytics, CDP, Bloomberg ESG, Refinitiv — has created both more data and more analytical complexity as providers use different methodologies and often disagree significantly on company-level ratings.

The ISSB's IFRS S1 and S2 standards, and the EU's CSRD, are driving convergence toward comparable, auditable sustainability disclosures that will eventually make ESG data more like financial data in reliability and comparability. UK ESG analysts who can navigate this evolving landscape — understanding the strengths and limitations of different data sources, engaging constructively with companies on disclosure quality, and applying both quantitative and qualitative analysis — are the most valued in the market.

The major ESG data and ratings providers include MSCI ESG Research, Sustainalytics, Bloomberg ESG, Refinitiv, and CDP — each with a distinct methodology and coverage focus. MSCI uses an industry-adjusted approach, rating companies relative to peers in their sector rather than on an absolute scale, which means a mining company can receive a high MSCI ESG rating even if its absolute ESG impact is significant. Sustainalytics focuses on ESG risk — specifically the risk that unmanaged ESG issues could have a material impact on enterprise value — and reports an unmanaged risk score rather than a relative grade. CDP focuses specifically on climate, water, and forests disclosure quality, running annual disclosure processes and scoring companies on the completeness and quality of their environmental disclosures. Bloomberg ESG aggregates ESG data from company disclosures and third-party sources into standardised metrics without applying the same judgmental rating overlay as MSCI or Sustainalytics. A key insight about ESG ratings is that they diverge significantly — academic research has shown correlations between major providers of only 0.4 to 0.7, meaning two providers can assess the same company's ESG performance very differently. This divergence reflects genuine differences in what is being measured, how data gaps are filled, and how metrics are weighted rather than simple measurement error. For an ESG analyst, the practical implication is that ratings should be used as an input to analysis, not a substitute for it — understanding what drives a particular rating, where providers disagree and why, is where analytical value is added.

Common mistakes

Naming providers without describing their methodological differences — lists without analysis are not sufficient
Not mentioning the divergence problem — it is one of the most important and well-documented issues in the field
Treating ESG ratings as objective assessments rather than methodologically-determined outputs with significant limitations
