AI Prompt Engineer

An AI Prompt Engineer designs, tests, and refines the instructions — known as prompts — that guide large language models (LLMs) to produce accurate, relevant, and safe outputs for a specific use case. Day-to-day work involves writing and iterating on prompts for production AI applications, running structured evaluations to measure how well prompts perform against defined quality criteria, collaborating with software engineers and product managers to integrate AI outputs into products and workflows, and documenting prompt strategies, failure modes, and evaluation results. The role requires both technical curiosity — understanding how LLMs behave and why — and strong written communication skills, since the primary tool is language itself. AI Prompt Engineering is one of the newest roles in technology, emerging alongside the mainstream adoption of LLMs from 2022 onwards. In the UK, it exists primarily at technology companies, AI-native startups, large enterprises running AI transformation programmes, and consulting firms advising clients on AI adoption. The role is still evolving — some organisations treat it as a standalone specialism, others embed it within product, data science, or content teams. Entry-level positions focus on prompt iteration and evaluation, while senior practitioners work on systematic evaluation frameworks, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) architecture, and model selection decisions.

The role emerged from the realisation that the same underlying model can produce dramatically different outputs depending on how it is instructed — and that designing those instructions well is a distinct skill that combines knowledge of how LLMs work, clear communication, and systematic experimentation. Early LLM applications in 2022 and 2023 were often brittle because prompts were written informally; as organisations moved from prototype to production, the need for rigorous prompt design and evaluation became clear. The UK has a significant AI sector, with London ranking among the top three global cities for AI investment. Regulatory interest in AI is high — the UK government's AI Safety Institute, formed in 2023, and the EU AI Act, which applies to UK firms deploying AI in the EU, have both increased attention to safe and reliable AI outputs, which prompt engineering directly addresses. Sample answer

There are several dimensions I think about. Hallucination is the most fundamental — LLMs confidently generate false information, and in a production application that can cause real harm. I design prompts to ground outputs in provided context rather than the model's general knowledge, and I include instructions to say "I do not know" rather than speculate when the information is not available. Prompt injection is a risk when user input is incorporated into the prompt — a malicious user can craft inputs that override system instructions. I keep user content clearly delimited from trusted instructions and validate or sanitise inputs before including them. Jailbreaking — attempts to make the model produce content that violates usage policies — is an ongoing concern, and I work with the model provider's guidelines on what the model will and will not do, and test explicitly for known jailbreaking patterns. Bias in model outputs — both the model's own training biases and biases introduced by the dataset used to evaluate or fine-tune — is something I try to assess by testing with diverse inputs. Processually, I think red-teaming — deliberately trying to break your own prompt — should be part of every production deployment, not just a final check. I also follow the EU AI Act requirements that apply to high-risk AI applications, and the UK government's AI Safety Institute guidance, as the regulatory landscape is developing fast.

Common mistakes

Describing safety only as "preventing offensive content" — hallucination and prompt injection are equally important
No mention of red-teaming — it is the standard practice for responsible prompt engineering
Not mentioning the regulatory dimension — EU AI Act and UK AI safety frameworks are live considerations
