How the role developed

The Business Analyst role emerged formally in the 1970s and 1980s as organisations began investing in large IT systems and needed professionals who could translate operational needs into technical requirements. The title was formalised by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA), founded in 2003, which established the BABOK (Business Analysis Body of Knowledge) as the profession's reference standard.
