How the role developed
Cybersecurity as a profession took shape in the 1990s with the commercialisation of the internet, but the role of a dedicated security analyst in an operational centre became common only in the 2000s as enterprises faced sustained, targeted attacks. The 2010s saw the explosion of ransomware, nation-state intrusions, and large-scale data breaches, forcing organisations of all sizes to build internal security capabilities.
The Junior Analyst role was formalised as organisations recognised they needed a pipeline of trained talent, not just senior specialists.
The role today
Today, the UK faces a structural shortfall of cybersecurity professionals — the DSIT Cyber Security Skills in the UK Labour Market 2024 report identifies significant gaps at every level. The Junior Analyst role is the most direct entry point into the profession and carries strong long-term career prospects.
Demand is expected to grow 29–33% globally through 2034 (BLS).
